How do Korean mothers teach their children to learn English?

Currently in Korea, homeschooling is becoming popular with mothers who are interested in teaching their children English at home, instead of sending their children to private institutions.
The English Teachers Academy (ETA) has taken advantage of this trend to open a program for mothers who want to teach their children at home in a more professional and effective way.

This program has been developed and provided by YBM Sisa.com, one of the largest language schools in Korea. It is based on the belief that mothers can be the best language teachers for their children.

“Mothers spend most of their time with their young children, so they are the first people with whom children can learn to speak,” said Eun Soo-jeong, general manager of YBM Sisa.com, in a statement. Recent interview with Korea Times.

“Not only do they read books to their children passively, but they also retell the stories in them. Sometimes they sing songs, or use toys or props while doing this,” added Eun.
“We have developed ETA programs for mothers who want to gain expertise for home teaching. These programs also help them find jobs. Before that, most of them had quit their jobs to spend time taking care of their children,” said Eun.
Ms. Eun also noted that an easy and effective way to teach languages, especially foreign languages like English to children, is by choosing the right books.

ETA’s program helps mothers who are not confident in their English ability to choose books suitable for their child’s level to read stories to their children from books.

When a mother reads to her child, she can share intimate time with her child and this helps to enhance the child’s emotional intelligence.

Cho Yun-ha, 34, a housewife with a 5-year-old daughter living in Seoul said, “When I decided to quit my job to take care of my daughter, I was determined to provide her with English language instruction. best possible. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I could be the most trusted teacher for my child, so I enrolled in the ETA program.”

“At that time, my daughter didn’t even know how to write Korean, so I thought it was more important to make her enjoy learning,” Cho said. That’s why this mother thought it would be very effective to read fairy tales in English with her child.

Another mother, Kim So-jin, 33 years old, with a 3-year-old son, living in Gyeonggi Province, a former housewife, said that she was interested in teaching English to children other than her own, although although she does not have a university degree in English Language.

“I got my certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) 10 years ago before I got married, and I think I can use it when I teach English under the ETA program. ,” said Kim.

“I have learned that the most important thing is to make children enjoy learning. Now I am an English teacher at a kindergarten.”
Kim also said she can continue her job and take care of her children at the same time.

“Many women have given up their careers, because they feel more responsible for the family. But this work helps me find a balance between the two,” added Kim.
